Alzheimer's & Dementia Services List
ALZHEIMER’S and DEMENTIA SERVICES
The National Alzheimer’s Association reports that 1 in 10 persons over 65, and nearly half of those over 85, are affected. In Cayuga County, it is currently estimated that there are approximately 2,258 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. The incidence of disease in Cayuga County will increase not only due to increase in the numbers of older people, but also because more people are living into their 90’s and 100’s. By 2015, there will be 2,325 individuals with Alzheimer’s disease needing care and support from their caregivers in Cayuga County. The following agencies offer help to families in Cayuga County:
Information and Support Services:

Alzheimer’s Community Service Program (315) 253-1104
Provides counseling, support and educational services to people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, and to their families. Training programs offered to families, caregivers and professionals on proper care of the disease. Contact: Corinne Ryan.
CNY Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center (ADAC) (877) 464-5540
Located at University Hospital in Syracuse, the center’s geriatricians and staff provide diagnosis and case management for persons with dementia, as well as educational activities, conferences, seminars, lectures and workshops for caregivers.
Caregiver Support Program (315) 253-1104
Provides support, counseling, home visits, and referral services to help caregivers through the caregiving experience. Maintains a lending library of information on caregiving and Alzheimer’s disease. Contact Corinne Ryan.
National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer’s, Disease Education and Referral Center (800) 438-4380
Provides information about Alzheimer’s disease, including information on research, treatment and support.

Support Groups

Alzheimer’s Support group for caregivers meets the first Tuesday of the month at 1:30pm at Mercy Health & Rehabilitation Center, 3 St. Anthony St., Auburn. Contact: Judy Greco at (315) 253-0351
Respite Services:
Alzheimer’s Respite Program (315) 612-0159
Provides up to $500 in financial assistance per year to help pay for any combination of respite care services. The care may be provided by friends, neighbors, family members, professionals, day care, or temporary residential placement. Contact Terri DeJohn at Seneca-Cayuga ARC.
Caregiver Respite Program (315) 253-1104
Offers help with funding respite services. Targets low-income families where the care-recipient is age 60 or older. Contact Corinne Ryan.
Day Programs:
Gordon Eadie Activity Center Day Program (315) 253-6519
Offers respite for family members while providing a safe, supportive environment for persons with memory loss and confusion. Participants enjoy social and activity programs, snacks, and a nutritious luncheon meal. Located at the Church of the Nazarene on Route 20 in Auburn. Tuesdays from 9:00am - 3:45pm. Cost is $34.00 for a full day and scholarship help is available based on family income. The program is operated by Seneca-Cayuga ARC. Mercy Health & Rehab Center Day Program (315) 253-0351
Offers a medical model day program Monday - Saturday from 8:00am – 4:00pm. Contact Judy Greco for information about private pay possibilities.
Safety Services:
Project Lifesaver (315)253-1226
A Public Safety Program to locate missing persons suffering from dementia and autism as well as other disorders that can cause wandering. Cayuga County Office for the Aging and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department has teamed up to provide this service. There is a deposit requested for the bracelet although no one will be turned away.

SAFE RETURN Program (315) 253-1104
A nationwide system designed to locate, identify, and safely return individuals with dementia who wander and become lost. There is a one-time fee to help offset the costs of registration and identification products. For more information, call the Caregiver Support Program.
